To meet USCG certification standards, color vision must be supported by objective, verifiable documentation – without color-sensing lenses. 

Acceptable documentation:

• Results from an approved USCG color vision test, OR
• A report from an optometrist or ophthalmologist that includes:
  • The name of the test being performed
  • A description of the testing method
  • The actual results and interpretation of the test

NOT Acceptable:

• Statements by the mariner or medical examiner describing colors seen without a documented test   
• Documentation such as  “The Crayon Test,”  “Yarn Test,” and/or “Seeing Colored Swatches” is not acceptable
• Checkboxes or handwritten notes indicating colors recognized
