To meet USCG certification standards, color vision must be supported by objective, verifiable documentation – without color-sensing lenses.
Acceptable documentation:
- Results from an approved USCG color vision test, OR
- A report from an optometrist or ophthalmologist that includes:
- The name of the test being performed
- A description of the testing method
- The actual results and interpretation of the test
NOT Acceptable:
- Statements by the mariner or medical examiner describing colors seen without a documented test
- Documentation such as “The Crayon Test,” “Yarn Test,” and/or “Seeing Colored Swatches” is not acceptable
- Checkboxes or handwritten notes indicating colors recognized
