Training Support Staff (tss)
Mr. Douglas C. Simpson
Mr. Doug Simpson is a training specialist with the Coast Guard Traveling Inspectors, helping the agency’s commercial vessel National Centers of Expertise provide world class training for those who inspect the most complex ships operating on U.S. waters. Because these Centers reside outside the Coast Guard Training System hierarchy, he oversees their continuous harmonization with the Training System’s high standards, guiding instructor professional development, curriculum lifecycle management, course implementation, and the creation and maintenance of other performance support interventions.
He served in the Fifth Coast Guard District from 2015 to 2019 as its Recreational Boating Safety Specialist and, before that, as a Marine Information Specialist.
Mr. Simpson retired at the rank of Commander with almost 21 years of active duty service in 2015 from his assignment as Chief, Marine Safety Training Branch, CG Training Center Yorktown. Prior to that, he served as Chief, Prevention Department at CG Sector Ohio Valley. Mr. Simpson served in multiple technical safety, security, and environmental protection assignments, including as a Maritime Advisor detailee to the Department of Homeland Security and assignments at CG Marine Safety Center, CG Marine Safety Office Houston-Galveston, and the Design & Engineering Branch at Headquarters. He began his active duty career aboard USCGC TAMPA (WMEC-902), where he realized his initial goals for joining the Coast Guard: saving lives, busting drug smugglers, and driving ships.
Mr. Simpson graduated with a bachelor's degree in marine science from the U.S. Coast Guard Academy in 1994 and a master’s degree in fire protection engineering from the University of Maryland in 2001.
